TEACHERS NOTICES

NCEA Year 11-13 Panui:
External Examinations Update Week 5
All Level 2 & 3 have shown strong courage and a very good effort so far at sitting their exams this week. Well done and thank you!!
Exams Coming Up Week 6:
L1 English exam on Tuesday 11 November
L1 Mathematics exam (2 students only) on Thursday 13 November.
Do some study this weekend please and also get extra rest. Eat well, drink lots of water, exercise and sleep well. Avoid spending lots or time on computer games, especially into the night, as this does not help your brain for learning.
Internal Assessments to complete:
Students are completing these in arranged blocks of time at school with their teachers. Work hard and get these done as soon as possible.
IMPORTANT Authenticity Reminder to all students:
What you submit must be your own work. That means you do not share your work with another student for help or feedback or use AI. You are to only share your work with the teacher of your subject.
Sign Out Card Process: All courses need to be signed out, Chromebook and chargers returned at the school office. All students need to be attending each day at school, until they have fully signed out. Parents have been contacted if students are failing to follow the process.
Girls black ties: Last term free black ties were given to senior girls to wear to school. Some students have chosen not to wear these, so they need to be returned to me before leaving school this year. Thank you to the students who have been wearing them. These students  may keep their tie even if they are not returning to school next year.
Our prayers are with you all, daily strength and perseverance towards a strong finish end of year.

Student Leadership Program
Last week   Class Leaders held a class meeting, where students talked about their favourite parts of school and came up with ideas for improvements. It was a great opportunity for the students to build confidence, work together, and show leadership in a real and useful way.

From the feedback gathered, class leaders decided most students said they really enjoy:

  • All the sporting opportunities
  •  worship/assembly
  • The juices and snacks available
  • Classroom learning

The top 5 things students thought could make the school even better included:

  • school events throughout the year (talent show, survivor, Wheels Day, House Competitions)
  • More bathrooms and changing rooms
  • Have a tuck shop
  • Places for middle and senior school to hangout
  • Doing more to prevent and respond to bullying

Overall, this program was a great opportunity for students to share their ideas and they really valued the chance to share their voices to make a change in our school.

Thank you for taking the time to hear about the project, and please take the time to consider seriously our students’ amazing ideas for future school improvements.

Measles

Kia ora

Health New Zealand is urging schools and ECEs in Northland to be alert for measles, with an escalating risk across the motu. Given the recent outbreak in Kerikeri and the Bay of Islands, there is a heightened risk of cases occurring within these communities.

Remind parents, caregivers and the school community

  • Watch out for measles symptoms – fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a blotchy rash.
  • To keep students home from school if they have any measles symptoms, and to stay home and ring their doctor, or call Healthline for FREE on 0800 611 116.
  • Students who are close contacts of a measles case should stay at home if they are not considered immune. National Public Health Service will check this and advise.
  • Check all whānau are immunised, and encourage them to catch up if not fully immunised or not sure: info.health.nz/measles-immunity.

Ask all staff born AFTER 1 January 1969 to check they have records of two MMR vaccinations after 12 months of age, or previous measles

  • Non-immune staff will have to stay home if exposed to measles at school or in the community, or if they need to look after children with measles.
  • Staff who were born overseas often don’t have immunisation records, and younger New Zealanders have sometimes missed out on two doses.
  • It is safe to have additional doses if staff don’t have proof or aren’t sure of their immunisations.

Prepare for possible measles cases

Download the Infectious disease outbreak preparedness in schools and ECEs checklist on getting prepared and what actions you will need to take if there is measles at your school: www.tewhatuora.govt.nz/publications/infectious-disease-outbreak-preparedness-in-schools-and-eces

If you hear of a possible case in your community or at school, isolate them and call public health for advice:

  • During office hours 8am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday call 09 430 4101 extension 60592
  • Outside of office hours call 09 430 4100 and ask for the on-call Health Protection Officer.
  • Isolate anyone sick with measles symptoms and send them home to ring for medical advice.

Measles immunisation – key information

  • Getting two doses of the MMR vaccine after 12 months of age protects 99% of people from measles.
  • The MMR vaccine is free in New Zealand for anyone aged under 18, and for people over 18 who are eligible for free healthcare.
  • Parents can book a vaccination appointment with a pharmacy, their doctor, nurse, or Hauora Māori or Pacific health provider.
  • For a list of vaccination sites in your area visit: https://info.health.nz/immunisations/booking-a-vaccine

Thank you for your help in stopping the spread of measles and protecting those at risk.
