Tena koutou whanau ma – warm greetings to everyone

Welcome back to school – I trust everyone has had a chance to refresh and to spend some quality time with whanau and friends.

We have a ten week term ahead of us in Term 3 and there is a lot happening that we want you to be aware of. Please note the important dates at the top of this newsletter, and check on the website from time to time if you are looking for info.

Parent / Teacher Meetings

Coming up shortly are our parent teacher meetings. This year we have embedded a fresh approach to reporting to whanau about students progress, achievement, attitude and engagement. You will be aware that reports are sent out every three weeks to bring you a more ‘current’ understanding about how your children are getting on at school, and in the reports are the direct contact links for families/whanau to engage with teachers should there be any concerns or questions.

With this in mind, we are also refreshing our approach to what was the traditional ‘Parent Interviews’ afternoons, because the original purpose for these events is now being met through the new reporting system. Instead of formal interviews we would like to invite whanau into the school to see the learning and teaching that is happening in the classrooms and then to remain after school for an informal whakawhanaungatanga / mix’n’mingle event, through to 5:00pm.

For parents who would like to meet up with teachers, the opportunity will be there to either let that happen then, or to make arrangements to meet at another time.

The organisation for the event (being held on the 30th July) will begin at 1:00pm with students at lunch break. The bell will go for afternoon classes at 1:40 and students will return to normal classes. Parents and whanau are invited to join in for the afternoon to see the students in their learning environments and to look over their class-work.

At the end of the day we will have an afternoon tea together and spend time building and strengthening relationships with one another (hopefully the weather will be fine).

The event will finish at 5:00pm.

Professional Learning and Development

As part of the drive to raise achievement in Reading, Writing and Maths our teachers are continually participating in professional learning. I am very pleased with how our teachers are invested into this learning, particularly as we look at the “Better Start” programmes and continue to build the structure into our learning programmes. This term there is a Maths focus for teachers from our region and this will take place on Friday August 8th. On this day we are asking whanau to keep Year 1 to 8 students at home because all of our teaching staff in these years will be off-site. For whanau who will find this a challenge we will have support staff on site who can supervise any children who do come to school.

Mid Term Break

With there being no public holidays this term we are proposing a Mid Term Break on Friday August 15th.

Attendance

At the end of last term I reported that our attendance statistics are improving – we are close to our pre-Covid levels now. Going forward we, along with all NZ schools will be working under the guidance of the Ministry of Education to meet new requirements for managing attendance at school. There is a strong focus on ensuring all students are attending regularly (90% and above) in order to achieve successful outcomes at school. I will discuss this further with you in the coming weeks to highlight the key points in thi nation-wide strategy.

Proverbs 16:3 Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.

Blessings to all

Student safety

Student safety is of paramount importance. Schools are responsible for regularly reminding caregivers and students on how to keep students safe before, during and after using a school bus.

We’ve put together some information that you may like to use in a newsletter to parents:

Reminders for parents and caregivers:

  • Caregivers are responsible for safely transporting their children to and from their school bus stop and as such are best placed to decide the safest way to do this.
  • Stick to the speed limit: it’s 20kph when passing a stopped school bus (on either side of the road).
  • Drop your tamariki off on the same side of the road as the bus stop.
  • Teach your tamariki to always get out of the car on the side closest to the curb.
  • Always take your tamariki to and from the bus-stop.
  • Teach your tamariki not to run across the road.
  • Remind your tamariki on how to keep safe boarding and disembarking the bus:

o    While waiting at the bus stop, keep well back from the road.

o    Wait until the bus has completely stopped and the door opens before getting on.

o    After getting off the bus, stand well back from the road and wait until the bus has gone and you can see clearly before moving.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has safety advice that on their website that you may find useful: Safety on buses | NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi.

If you have any questions about any of the above, or any about school transport assistance, please get in touch with me – as always, I’m happy to help.

WHAT ARE ATTENDANCE DUES?

The Ministry of Education does not fund building related costs at our School. Attendance Dues are only used to pay for building related costs. They can not be used for any other purposes.  Paying Attendance Dues is a condition of enrolment for all students attending our School. Attendance Dues are compulsory – there is a legal requirement for parents and caregivers to pay Attendance Dues under the Education and Training Act 2020. They are not a donation.
