PRINCIPAL’S NOTICE

 

Kia ora whanau, our present roll is 156 with two New Entrants beginning next Tuesday. When the tamariki are happy, we are making progress.

 

Strategic Goals:

Attendance Management Plan:

We continue to track well and have made good progress. As

stated, with winter coming on, our challenge is to keep our students engaged and

attending. Our weekly attendance is sitting at 84%. Well done, parents, keep it up

 

Academia:

Primary and Secondary Staff & Professional Development Update. 

All our staff are vigorously coming to grips with the wide changes in the curriculum, with a major focus on Literacy and numeracy.

Student Leadership Development:

Our student leadership development programme is starting to flourish in our kura. Students meet weekly with our Leadership coach, Whaea Lana, to plan and strategise areas of service and improvement for our kura. This has been evident in our assemblies, and embedding healthy competition, teamwork, tuakana-teina and school community building through House Groups. Matua Komene also has a leadership coaching role, developing our cultural and sports leaders. Our sports teams are also flourishing in our community and beyond.

Writing Coaching:

Writing coach Whaea Jessica Anderson Smith has been leading our Talk for Writing approach across Years 1-8. This means that when we onboard new staff, they get the guidance and support they need to implement our structured writing programme. A scope and sequence, model texts and toolkits are provided, and also discussions around our process and progress are an integral part of our syndicate meetings. It must be mentioned that most students show enjoyment in using this approach to writing. Trish Vesey is currently doing the MoE Years 7-10 Writing PLD, which is looking at high-impact acceleration strategies for writing. For example, Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) is an evidence-based instructional framework that helps students become confident, independent writers. We will be looking more into this for Years 7-10.                         

Sports Academy / Sport: 

With the introduction of the sports academy, we have very few disruptions during lunch because the boys are in the gym pumping weights. They love what they are doing and, as a whole, are completing their SIT Unit Standards. The girls are also enjoying their activities, and my thoughts moving forward are that we begin the academy in year 9 so when they reach seniors, they are physically and mentally prepared. Christian character is intertwined in the delivery of the physical as well as the written work.

We have 4 netball teams, 2 Basketball Teams, and a Rippa Rugby Team, 2 Male and 2 female students in the Kotahitanga 1st XV Rugby team, which is made up of KCS, NC, and Te Kura. We have three students in the Warriors Academy, and three tauira in The Hokianga Storm Under 15 Rugby League, which will be competing next weekend in Rotorua. We have a group of seniors representing Northland in NFL Flag Football Wellington, all air flights and accommodation are paid for.

Homework Centre:

Several teachers have put their hands up to begin a lunchtime Homework center. This

will be in the prefab next to the caretaker’s room. Hopefully, we can get this in action as soon as possible. This space is also used for our Ark Club gifted and talented learning and for working with groups of students (learning support).

 

Nga Manu Korero:

We have a senior and junior student competing in the Taitokerau Nga Manu Korero at Pompalier College on Wednesday and Thursday, June 3rd and 4th, with prize giving on the 5th. We had originally entered a student into Ta Hiimi Henare Bilingual, but he has since pulled out. Nevertheless, moving forward, we hope to have Te Reo covered at next year’s event.

This year’s contestants are Dechei August  Kaka, Senior English and Nyah Solomona Junior English.

 

Te Reo Māori:

This is a work in progress. I am applying for Level 3 Funding for Years 9-13, which requires 7.5 hours per week minimum. We are somewhat off from our target; however, we have to start somewhere. Six staff are doing online Te Reo Māori Stage 1, and we are also blessed with 3 Native speakers, myself, Komene, and Whaea Waiora. Therefore, the kura is in a healthy situation moving forward. Whaea Waiora is a fixed-term for this year; however, I am looking to re-employ her. Years 1-8 are still on 4B Funding, which is very minimal.

 

Bible Years 1-13

Years 1-8 continue to use Interact, a Bible-based curriculum, to guide our daily Devotions and provide a biblical foundation for our subject learning areas across the curriculum. Maori Postal Sunday School is also a weekly key feature of our Bible studies curriculum for Years 1-10. Years 11-13 do Bible via NCEA Assessments. Devotions, scripture memorisation, preaching by students at assembly, as well as morning devotions.

 

Prayer:

We have a lunchtime prayer meeting for girls every Wednesday, which is run by our Teacher Aid, Sarah.

Praise and Worship:

We are very grateful to Bev Baines for raising a primary group that is slowly coming to fruition.

.Chess: To accommodate students who are not into active sports or just like being on their own, I asked our caretaker, Mike Vegar, if he would take the students at lunchtime. He now has between seven and ten students, which is very positive.

WHAT ARE ATTENDANCE DUES?

The Ministry of Education does not fund building related costs at our School. Attendance Dues are only used to pay for building related costs. They can not be used for any other purposes.  Paying Attendance Dues is a condition of enrolment for all students attending our School. Attendance Dues are compulsory – there is a legal requirement for parents and caregivers to pay Attendance Dues under the Education and Training Act 2020. They are not a donation.
