PRINCIPALS’ NOTICE

Kia ora whanau ma – warm greetings to everyone

WHAT HAPPENS IF WE HAVE A CASE OF COVID IN THE SCHOOL?

Firstly, if someone in the household is suspected of having COVID-19, all children in the household should stay at home and keep the school informed.

If an outbreak occurs in the school, we will get in touch with the Ministry of Education regional contact person to let them know that there is a confirmed case. They will provide the School with advice about our next steps and support the school through the process. Their team will connect with public health services to seek advice for the school.

Closing the school may not be required, and should only occur in consultation with, and direction from the Ministry of Health or in discussion with the Director of Education.

We will need to identify all people in your school who may be considered contacts, through the following:

  • Timetable (which staff were onsite with which classes and groups)
  • Attendance register
  • Sports, cultural and other extracurricular group lists
  • Visitor register and contact tracer app.

To aid tracing and contact we have phone numbers and / or email address for all students and whanau and will have contact details of visitors through our ‘sign-in’ procedures.

Identifying the contacts can take some time to ensure the risk assessment undertaken by public health is based on good information.

As an interim measure to mitigate risk and if advised by the Director of Education to do so, the following actions can be taken:

  • The confirmed case and their household should already be self-isolating.
  • As a precaution, those who have been in the same classroom/bubble/room as the confirmed case for the previous 48 hours can be asked to stay away, until public health advice has been received.
  • There is no testing requirement at this time for those individuals unless they are feeling unwell and are advised by Healthline or their GP to get tested.
  • The school will however be provided with specific guidance based on the public health risk assessment as soon as possible; which is likely to require any close contacts to self-isolate and get tested.
  • Undertake a clean prior to the other students, children and staff return onsite.

Essential supplies- We have…

  • A supply of surgical masks and tissues will be provided at all times.
  • Waste disposal bins – with foot-operated lids for infection control- kept in sick bay; at least two
  • Soap or antiseptic hand gel and paper towels for drying, kept in sick bay (sufficient quantity anticipated to cover predicted number of children who may become ill at school).

Environmental Cleaning

  • Environmental cleaning will be organised by the Principal
  • Cleaners will be ‘trained’ or advised of appropriate waste disposal processes

Protective clothing (mask, gown and gloves) must be worn. Use detergent and water followed by sodium hypochlorite 3-5% 1:100 solution 1 part household bleach to 10 parts water (10mL/1L water). Clean all horizontal surfaces and all surfaces that are touched by students and staff. Floors are to be wet mopped with clean water and detergent with the mop rinsed thoroughly on completion and inverted to dry. Cleaning clothes should be disposed of in a biohazard bag. Biohazard bags ordered and kept at the Sick Bay in sufficient quantity to protect anticipated numbers of children who may become ill over this period.

A linen skip and a biohazard bag will be kept in the designated Sick Bay. Minimal linen will be used and changed after each use taking care not to shake it. All waste will go into a rubbish bag. Linen and waste will be emptied daily or when containers are two thirds full.
