Te Tau Hou – Welcome back
Tena koutou whanau ma – warm greetings to everyone
 
Ko tenei te mihi ki a koutou katoa i te timatatanga o te tau hou. Haere mai whanau ma, i roto i te ingoa me te aroha o te Atua Kaha Rawa i waenganui i a matou. Welcome one and all in the name and love of our Lord most high.
 
Well, that was a bumpy start to the year! Open first day and closed for the next. Please pray with us for the rest of the year to be one without disruption and instead, one that is full of realised opportunity and success – righteousness, peace and joy.
At the end of last year we welcomed new students into the school and at the same time, cleared our waiting list for what is termed “Preference” students. This year we have opened with a full school roll so the waiting list will come in to play again – please whanau, if you are considering Kaikohe Christian School for your tamariki/rangatahi/child, please contact us early to reserve an early place on the waiting list – there is always student movement so we will certainly be able to enroll new students as we progress through the year.
Attendance
Attendance is a Board priority again this year and we intend to continue to strengthen our support for students to attend regularly. You will recall our incentives scheme last year, targeting 80% attendance rate and rewarding our seniors who achieved that target with a trip to Rainbow’s End. This year we are extending that incentive to all students and are setting the target at 85% (we are aiming long term to have better than 90%). At the end of each term, this incentive initiative will reward students attaining that target. Events like a trip out to Cape Brett on the Discovery boat or a day at the Whangarei pools or Laser Maize are likely.
We will also be closely monitoring attendance and communicating early with whanau when there is concern so that we can address matters quickly and promote strong attendance. This message is vitally important to the success of our students as we demonstrate year on year that those who attend well achieve well and that those who don’t achieve well typically have poor attendance.
Additionally, when we seek support for student learning from outside agencies, the provision of this support is dependent on student attendance – sometimes this support is withdrawn from us if attendance rates for the individual students concerned are low.
Uniform
It is such a pleasure to see the vast majority of our students in correct uniform – thank you all so much for helping us maintain this standard in the school. In saying that however, there are some students we need to remind regularly about wearing correct uniform and we are asking for whanau to support us in this area.
We do have spare items that we lend to students when they have needed to come out of uniform because for example the clothes are in the wash. Students are asked to go to staff responsible in this area, to get the items they need for the day. We also have some uniform items that have been donated back to the school that we can give to students / whanau when needed.
Because of the need to attend to the ‘little things’ so they don’t escalate into wider areas of concern, we are not permitting students who are out of uniform to join their normal classes. Although we don’t anticipate this happening very often, this line will help our students to meet these expectations.
One last point about uniform is that we have tried to make it as easy as possible for whanau to access uniform items at reasonable cost, but we do understand there are circumstances which make it difficult to afford what is needed. If this is the case for you, please come and talk to us – we can help with second hand/donated items. 
Sun Safe
I don’t need to remind about the dangers posed to skin health at this time of year, especially as we engage with outdoor activities such as PE, sports and swimming, not to mention just being outside during intervals and breaks. Previously we have supplied students with bucket style hats but it is apparent that many of these are now missing. Students need to be wearing hats outside and preferably sunblock as well. This week we will do a stock-take of hats we have on hand and then make sure each student has a school hat so we can be sure we are supporting our young ones in this area. 
 
We are excited to be back with our students and eagerly look forward to seeing how God is moving in this place. Pastor Mike has prayed for a great outpouring of the Spirit over students, whanau and staff and that we be a place from where our graduates go out and influence the community, the wider community, the nation and the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
May the Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you (2Cor 13:14).

BIKE SAFETY  “No Helmet On Head, It Goes In The Shed”

If your children are riding their bikes to school they MUST WEAR A HELMET, If NO HELMET is been worn, parents will be notified to come and collect their children bikes. It is confirmed that students have been seen wheeling on  the main road without a HELMET but with there helmets attached to their handle bars not on their heads.. Please ensure they have one on before leaving home!!

NEW CLASS NAMES

Due to a few structural changes in our middle school there are new class names that have been allocated;
Whaea Lana’s class is now AROHA, Ms Baines class is now EXCEL and Mrs Whiu class is now COURAGE.

PRIMARY SWIMMING NOTICE

Kia ora Whanau,

We shall be swimming on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon starting next week at Northland College. There
is no charge for these lessons, but students shall need the following:

● swimming togs, towel, a bag for carrying them
● no swimming with infectious sores, wounds, etc.
● no towel, no swim
You are most welcome to come along and support either in the pool or on the side. Please speak to your
child’s classroom teacher if you wish to attend these swim sessions.

PRIMARY SCHOOL TRIP

Auckland Camp

Tena Koutou whanau ma,

 

The dates for camp this year are Monday 27th March (week 9) until Wednesday 29th March.

Given that this years’ camp is in the city there is a greater expense. The cost is $60 per child. However, if you have more than one child attending the camp the cost is $30 per child. 

Payments can be made at the school office OR online using the school bank details:

We know that costs can be an issue so Psalm in the office is able to arrange regular installments spread throughout the year if this is requested.

We intend on making every minute count with a combination of Christian based curriculum activities, relationship building and simple fun. Children in Mrs Vesey and Mrs Tzikoucos class will go swimming, visit the zoo, eat ice cream and spend time at the viaduct. Children in Whaea Jenny and Whaea Lana’s class will go ice-skating, visit the Sky Tower, the Maritime museum and spend time in the central business district using public transport.

Further information shall follow but for now we would like confirmation of those attending to ensure that booking numbers are precise. If you decide to not send your child to camp you shall need to make alternative arrangements for them at home.

PLEASE, return the attached response slip to the school office by Friday of week 3 (17th Feb). We shall assume that non-returned slips imply that children shall not be attending camp.

MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP

Urupukapuka CampTena Koutou whanau ma,

A Middle School camp has been arranged this term at Urupukapuka Island for both Excel (Mrs Baines) and Courage (Mrs Whui) classes. The camp shall run from Wednesday 22nd March (week 8) until Friday 24th March.

The intention is for our students to develop stronger relationships across the middle school cohort as there are greater mixed curricular activities planned throughout this year, as well as learning about the historical significance of this island, the many Pa sites that are located and to experience ‘survival’ and gathering of kai moana.  

The cost is $30 per child.

The New Zealand Teachers Games (NZTG) is an opportunity for educators and support staff to have fun with their colleagues, to compete seriously or socially and to enjoy each other’s company on the sports field. It provides a setting away from the pressures of school and tertiary institutions for all staff to relax, to network socially and professionally and to experience all the fun that being physically active, and part of a team can bring.

Open to anyone on the payroll of Early Childhood Centres, Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, and Tertiary Institutions. With options for all levels of ability, fitness, and competitiveness, the NZTG has something for everyone so why not get a big bunch of your colleagues (or the whole team!!) together and GET YOUR GAME ON!

Sport is a big part the landscape in NZ schools and tertiary institutions. It develops culture and pride and is a key engagement vehicle for students in learning, in their institution, and within their wider community. Sport can contribute to academic and social outcomes with clear links to key curriculum competencies including Relating to Others, Participating & Contributing and Managing Self.
